Tips to Avoid Vehicle Suspension Damage

Replacing your vehicle’s suspension is an expensive proposition. Auto Correct Car Care maintains and replaces suspensions, and we’d like to give you some tips on how you can avoid suspension damage. Don’t set yourself up for an expensive car repair bill. Rather, heed the following advice to keep your car, truck, or SUV’s suspension system working as it should without trouble.

Slow Down and “Step” Back

Your vehicle doesn’t step but you get what we mean. When you drive hard and constantly slam on your brakes, you stress your vehicle’s suspension. Your vehicle sways back and forth after each sudden brake, and this wears down your shocks and struts prematurely and also decreases the lifespan of your brake pads and tires. Slow down, step back from the vehicle in front of you, and apply the brakes gently.

Go Slowly Over Speed Bumps

Speeding over speed bumps because to heck with the city for installing them is only going to hurt your vehicle’s suspension. Yes, the shocks and struts are designed to absorb road shock, but they can only do so much, especially if you think hitting speed bumps at high speeds should earn you points. Speed bumps are installed to slow drivers down, so do just that and drive over them – again – gently.

Don’t Haul Heavy Loads

Pull your vehicle’s owner’s manual out of the glove compartment and check to see how much weight your car, truck, or SUV can actually handle. If you overload your vehicle and exceed the maximum weight capacity, you’re going to damage your suspension. Keep in mind it’s the suspension that must handle the weight. It can only take so much, so make sure to avoid overloading your automobile.

Stay On-Road

Do you improvise when you drive? Pull onto dirt shoulders to pass slower drivers and occasionally off-road? Unless it is customized, a vehicle suspension is not designed to handle excessive stress. It might be fun to see if your compact car can handle a dirt track, but you’re going to damage the suspension and possibly the vehicle undercarriage if you tackle it. Stay on-road and drive over bumps, potholes, and road debris carefully.
