Thanksgiving Driving Tips

Turkey Day is almost here and nothing is better than getting together with your loved ones and eating until you burst. If you are traveling to the Thanksgiving Day festivities this year, make sure your day is filled with all thanks and no trouble by following some driving tips to keep you and your family safe. Auto Correct Car Care recommends you do these things before and during your travels.

Have Your Vehicle Checked

Don’t hit the road without a vehicle check first. This gives mechanics a chance to check the health of your vehicle and replace any parts or fluids as necessary. Your family will not be thankful if you get stranded on the side of the road. Just saying.

Make Plans

Plan ahead if you’re going somewhere that is unfamiliar; don’t just rely on your GPS system. Visually look at your route and familiarize yourself with your highway changes and exits so don’t get into an accident changing lanes suddenly because your exit is upon you.

Respect Truckers

Trucks do not have the ability to stop or handle the same way smaller vehicles do and there are plenty of truckers on the road on Thanksgiving Day. Respect them by giving them plenty of distance. Don’t cut them off, either. They cannot stop on a dime.

Get an Emergency Kit

Don’t hit the road without some emergency supplies. Specifically, make sure to have a flashlight with extra batteries, jumper cables, a fire extinguisher, flares, blankets, bottled water, non-perishable food, a tire repair can and a radio with extra batteries.

Pay Attention

Don’t drive tired or distracted. Keep your eyes on the road all around you and pull over to rest if you get sleepy. If you’re tired after your Thanksgiving meal, take a nap or spend the night before heading home. Two seconds of distracted driving can cause an accident so stay alert.

Check the Weather

Check the weather before you head out and if you expect extreme weather on your route change your plans or prepare for it. Reroute if you can to avoid the weather and put tire chains in the trunk. Leave early to avoid rushing, inclement weather or not.

Finally, buckle up no matter what. Seatbelts reduce the chances of a fatality in an automobile accident by 45 percent – 45 percent.
